It has been almost a decade now since I graduated from Point Grey Mini School, which makes this a very natural time to reflect back on my experiences there and how they helped shape my life.

I went to elementary school in another catchment area and began my first year at the Mini not knowing a single person in my class. I was nervous, insecure and mad that my parents had decided I was going to be attending some weird “special” school with a bunch of strangers. Five years later, I left the Mini a very different person. It’s difficult to succinctly summarize all of the reasons why, but put quite simply, through the Mini: I met my best friends, I found my first true role models to look up to, I was challenged academically by both my teachers and my peers, I went on adventures, I learned that “good enough” was not something to strive for and perhaps most importantly, I was allowed to be myself (even when that involved being ever so slightly disruptive in class).

It will came as a surprise to no one when I say that one’s teenage years can be very trying and I truly believe that our time at the Mini did an unbelievable job of preparing my classmates and I for the rest of our lives. Since graduating, I have gone on to become a lawyer and currently work at a law firm here in Vancouver. I can confidently say that without my experience at the Mini, I would not be where I am today. Being a student at the Mini was a once in a lifetime experience that I am profoundly grateful for and I hope that many future generations of students will have the chance to feel the same way.
